Great thread, I personally have found it very informative. I have never attempted the league before but lately I have found myself thinking about trying it out.

I would strongly recommend joining the league. I had my first season last time and it was thoroughly enjoyable even without any real success. You are likely to win at least one race though, even with lower class horses.

call me old school but i dont want to have to mess with many files all time just for breeding. i want to breed just in the game the normal ingame way. has anybody stayed competative in the online league just playing the game standard? ( ie without copyin mares or specail saves without ck trials etc just season to season ) curious?

still i think ill need alot more seasons before i even think of entering the online league.

my furthest main game save is in 2023.

so far ive found the bars can be deceiving and the potentail bar too ive had horses with poor bars win races i never expected to as per their poor bar ratings but they still win

depends how you mean competitive
i would imagine it would be very difficult to win g1s just playing the game normally
breeding for the lge is very time consuming but necessary to be competitive IMO
but there are plenty of trainers who have had success by playing normally
winning major handicaps and even g1 handicaps
to win a G1 takes many hours of lge breeding
i only won 1 last season i can tell you i put loads of time in to it
its a big commitment to be really competitive
i recommend you continue to play the game for fun
but have a crack at the lge there are loads of races at every level its great fun

I tend to mostly play in game, though it is vital to trial in the CK before you upload your horses because CK conditions are different to game conditions. I do transfer horses between games, but I rarely have multiple copies of horses in one game at a time.

A horse without a full potential bar can easily win a G1 in game, but it would seriously struggle in the league. If you're curious then I'd suggest that you trial few of your best at places like Ascot, Newmarket and either Newbury or Doncaster pick the best 4-5 (try to choose varying distances because you'll struggle to find races for them all otherwise) and upload them. Then you'll have an idea how much work you need/want to put into your game.

To put some of it into perspective, I think I am pretty good at breeding good horses and have been for a while in the game. But I entered the league for the first time since SO2 last season and they did surprisingly well. I won 3 (I think) major handicaps including the Ebor and also had horses running into the top 6 in group races, including a 4th in the Arc on the flat, and won a graded race or two over jumps. I sat down for about 4 hours on the penultimate upload day and rushed through a few seasons to get that team. I imagine this time around it may be tougher, but if you have a good grounding to your breeding then it won't take you long to find a handful of horses who can be competitive in the league.

its my understanding - that we can test only our own retired horses in the ck trials?

right now i dont realy have any of my own retired fully as im breeding the few good ones i have found

No, that isn't how it works. You press the 'E' button on the top RHS of the horse screen, pick instructions and then they go into the CK. The horse never leaves your game, so you can do it at any point.

no you can use other peoples horses to test against your own you juct cant use these in lge
or breed from them

eg i send you a game with 5 milers enclosed
you can export them test them & against your own in ck
