Looks like Newmarket day 2 meeting is going to be a slog yet the ground apart from Aintree over the jumps is going the other way firmer.

I trialled all my NH horses over soft ground, expecting bad ground conditions. The firmer ground in week 1 didn't suit my horses, the softer ground in week 2 was much better for my horses, I am not expecting much with the firmer going in week 3.

I don't follow racing in real life, is the going usually firm at this time of year?

It was firmer at the start of this season's jumping than normal. The big trainers have been slow to get the better horses out.
