Post subject:  Handicaps Flat

I have done Mondays Handicaps and are now showing on tom in the results Page I am hoping to do the handicaps each day the results are out and showing on tom in the results page this way Trainers who might be busy towards the end of the week will know what rating a horse as got to help them and the race secretaries with handicap races and help with scratched runners for being over the handicap band.

Flat ratings do to the field size's I have decided to rate the first week's race's differently from last season the winter Derby and Sprint Cup winner will get a starting Rating Of 110 I have started most winners of the maidens with a rating of 105 except for horse's that won really well I have put a starting rate of 108 this will help me working from 1st to last in rating horse's better.

Gray, don't you think the ratings are maybe a little high?
In the next few weeks there are some 0-80 rated handicaps coming up, as far as I can see there don't seem to be many horses rated lower than 80 :?

Maiden winners are rated too low, they shouldn't be able to enter handicaps off 105. And I dont think they should be able to at all. If you want them to be able to run in handicaps then at least rate them 110, most will end up in the 120's if not 130's.

Ignore my last post

I have just checked there is maybe 1 horse in each race rated 80 or less, 30 races or so this week, that makes 30 rated lower than 80!

I'm tired and I wasnt thinking straight (nothing to do with one of mine rated 91 for finishing 10th)

I agree with this. Horses finishing 16/16 should be rated nearer 60 than 80 imo. 25lbs from first to last is not enough, the difference in ability is nearer 50lbs, maybe even 60 in some of the races.

System Gray ran last season worked well. Not many entries in the lower handicapped races but gave everyone a chance of a winner. No point fiddling with something that worked last season

I am working with less runners in maidens than last year Next week we have 2 0-90 races moderate horse's will be rated under 90 and should be aimed for these races but that is the trainer's option in week 3 we have 2 0-85 handicaps by then all horse's should be on the right mark.

Yes I know 105 is a bit low matt and I already give my reasons I can't explain properly as race results are still to come but for instance race 23 8 runners if I started with the winner on 110 the bottom horse would be 90 and I don't think that is fair on the horse or trainer so by lowering the band to 105 the gap in ratings should be closer together and I expect all 105 horse's will be in group races next week ratings going up.

No need to shoot anyone, just some friendly advice.

I dont think a lot of the horses rated 80 will be weighted correctly by week 6 let alone week 3. Could you not drop those in last to say 70 and then say the horses finishing fourth or fifth last about 80?

Race 23 is hard to handicap and I dont envy you there. But thats one race. If you want to handicap that one differently to the rest then fair enough, but the maidens with biggish fields need a far bigger spread. 25lbs for horses beaten 20L? The ones out the back are going to be a stone too high in the weights.
