Gallops are essential in my opinion and are the only true way of finding out what quality you have.
I always trial my newcomers with my older proven G1 winners, and see how they fare.
Use a lead horse that has good start/gate abilities and prefer to be jockied handy or as an early pace. IMO the lead horse dosent have to be top grade, but should be able to set pace. Then throw in your proven G1 horse or horses with your new 2yo's or 3yo's.
With the gallops, an important thing to remember is that all horses carry 9 stone even. So theoretically your Older horses have an advantage and should be able to come home first in the gallop.
So always notice when 2yo's and 3yo's come very close to your proven older group one winners. If the younger unexposed horses manage to head your older experienced G1 horses, then you know you have some quality coming through.
