 New to Horse Racing - Please Explain Pyramid

Post New to Horse Racing - Please Explain Pyramid
I'm new to the sport and was hoping someone could explain the pyramid in horse racing. I know that you typically start out in maiden races, but what's next, what's the general order to the very top? What is the top anyway?

Also I see some races will say Group 3 and then some will also have something like "C7" listed in the race. Can someone explain these?

Group (1) the highest
Group (2)
Group (3)
Listed
then comes the Classes
the higher class would be next to the listed
