Post subject: | Multiplayer - and other - future possibilities? |
Dear Mark, and other players, I have been hooked on the Starters Orders series for some time (am actually still deeply engrossed in SO5, but will likely make the transition to SO6 soon). I have never taken part in any of the online leagues, as they seem quite daunting to a relative newbie, but I will definitely graduate at some point. I have a couple of questions for Mark, really, but maybe other players may also have an idea if these hoped for the future may be possible (even logistically): 1) Could we ever have the option to play a multiplayer game? By this, I envisage hours of enjoyment by playing the same game with a friend, who is also a complete SO addict. I would think it would be amazing if we could both run our own stables within the same game, which would of course allow us to compete our horses against each other's, with game time moving at the same pace. One thing that puts me off the online leagues is that I feel my time would always prevent me from being in any way competitive (as my champion would likely be so far behind other people's, based largely on them having played for far more game hours to get their champion than I could ever hope to). If we could play a multiplayer game that progresses at the same pace, this would level the playing field I feel. 2) I wonder whether the idea to make the online leagues/races run for real prize money has ever been mooted? I used to play a game like this for real money (Reality Racing) but it dwindled due to the smallish pool of players and a complete dominance by a few. If there was a way to level the playing field between breeders (e.g. as in the multiplayer scenario discussed above, where game time moves at the same pace for everyone) then I could see this being of major appeal to lots of players. Once again, I love this game, and am hugely grateful to Mark and the team for making it what it is. I can't wait to get to grips with SO6! |

I played Reality Racing until 2006 I just checked my stable on it its still alive like you I give it up has it was costing to much and like you said dominated by a few and I am sure that would happen if money ever got involved in this game we have had players Dominate the League without money god help us if we put money in lol i know you suggest a level playing field but there's always someone looking for a way around things ( Like the way i didn't say cheat) ![]() Gray |

I just had a look at Reality Racing after reading your post and can't believe how badly it has gone downhill! I remember regularly seeing races worth 400 pounds being run, but now there's just tiny fields competing for pennies. I really feel they could have made that a huge winner, which is why I think SO could well do so. I think the reason Reality Racing went downhill was that once people worked out how the maths worked, they were able to completely dominate, and it became impossible for the smaller guy to do so. You are probably right about a few people always being likely to do the same (I guess its true of everything in life), but I really think the key to it not happening in a SO scenario would be to make sure everyone was playing at the same game pace, say one week at a time (like Reality Racing). Those with experience in the game would likely have an advantage, but it would mean that anyone could bag a superstar from the get-go, and that the game would progress so slowly that it would take a decade or more for someone to grab a vice-like grip based on pedigree dominance. I suspect the programming logistics alone mean it could never happen, but I think it'd be very interesting. Especially as the real-time game progression would mean that we'd all be competing as trainers to win, say, a 2,000 Guineas, or a Champion Chase, which would only be run once a year. It'd be great! |

Personally - if SO6 or future SO games went online for actual cash........I wouldn't participate. There were enough ruffled feathers in the last round of the league - heaven forbid how bad it would be if dough was involved. |

I should say I have yet to experience the league, but am intrigued to know what the causes of the ruffled feathers were!? As I said before I have long wanted to be involved in the league but fear my lack of experience would mean my horses were way off the standard required! Without knowing what the causes of the feather-ruffling were, I may be wrong, but I would think the key to establishing a level playing field really would be ensuring all players are operating in the same game world, which kind of ties in with my original question. Even if it was just to allow me to play against a friend in the same game world (and time), I wonder if this is possible from a programming point of view... |
