How big a part is betting?

If it is a big part, where to get instruction on betting and how to apply to game? I do know the one cheese tactic of betting on a
Legend horse first race.

Would I be ok, just slower to get upgrades only betting on my own? I can bet on my own horses in game fairly well*, just not others.

* I have a very modest background around TBs decades back around barns, so I am getting a handle on bottom feeding claiming game starts, game terms, reselling and training ok. Still a newbie but think I'm going the right way in my last 2 saves. However I have NO background betting, either for real as I never allowed myself, or in a prior game which I played by mail back in the dark ages of the web. It hurt me in that game badly not being good at betting, though I'm happy as a non-bettor in daily life.

Betting for most in game is just a side fancy.
To get up and running it is better to start a new game - don't buy any horses at the start of the season - have a look at the ones you have in your stable and sell the non performers.
Race the ones you keep and place them wisely and hopefully you can build your bank so you can buy a breeding barn.
Once you have that you can buy some cheapies (buy as many cheap fillies and mares without hurting you budget) and start breeding and selling to improve your bank again.
Don't worry about breeding quality yet - it's just about the cash.
Soon you should be able to start buying more expensive horses........then you can start putting them through the barn with an eye on racing them.

By this stage you'll start noticing patterns in the game where you can improve your chances on the punt and to bet here and there will be no drama.

Welcome to the game :-)

PS betting on overseas horses in a local race has a handy strike rate.

Agree with that, early on you may bet like crazy on your own horses as money is key, but one star can make you millions and before long your be a multi billionaire. Betting is academic for me in all my games now.

Thank you guys so much! This is good news for me on betting then.

I already learned I'm not rich enough to afford the gamble of a 2 yr old purchase in the starting auction the hard way. It is good advice as well.

I only bet on Frankel in any new Flat Race or Sprinter Sacre in Jumps race. I sell most of my Horses that are no good in first Auction check the legends Tab and see when these legends are running and go to the races on that day and bet Most not all of my Money on them I then wouldn't not bet again this is what I would do being new to the game but I am not and now I transfer my good horses from another game in I bet my money on them.
