Struggle for pace
I have what looks like a great horse but the jockey keeps coming out with this.
Any tips to combat this because he gets this on Hurdles & chasing.
Do you have to give the jockey certain orders to stop this?

It means it needs a step up in trip but the jockeys also say it when they give the horse a bad ride!!

Like the other say, the horse would need longer.
What you can also try, is try different race tactics. Get the horse to race handily, or force the pace, if it's got the stamina and try to outstay the others.
Also, choose tracks to suit your horse. He may not have the speed, but that is only one factor. When it comes to finishing up the hill at Cheltenham, every ounce of stamina is needed to help tired legs get the final 2 furlongs.

I'm also interested in getting more information.

Re: Struggle for pace
Run another horse in the race with and set it as a pacemaker and see if the horse lacking the pace runs better. If so, it means the horse needs a fast tempo. It may not be a sit and sprint type of horse. If that doesnt work, then as others mentioned step it up in distance 2furlongs at a time.

Re: Struggle for pace
Basically, its the jockey saying "The other horses were too fast!".
So, as said either need a longer trip with slower pace, or the jockey did not ride well, or the trip really didn't run at the expected pace (it was so fast they should have tired out) or ...
(not said yet)
.. horse needs a drop in class to run with a slower pack.
Can be any of them.
