Post Set schedule for top jumps horses
Just started a new jumps game and wondering best way to start nhf races to hurdles and chases over different distances?

I've been thinking hard about how to answer this question because there isn't really a set pathway like you'd get on the flat for a Guineas horse for example. I tend to avoid Cheltenham novice races with my hurdlers and go to Aintree because there are usually fewer runners. After their novice year I tend to stick to grade 1 races to avoid the weight penalty. It's hard to give examples of routes because my schedule is different to the default. It's even harder to give examples of novice campaigns because there aren't really set ones like on the flat. My best advice would probably be to aim for the major meetings. Hennessey weekend/Betfair G/C/Tingle Creek weekend, King George meeting, Ascot early March meeting, Cheltenham, Aintree, Punchestown and you should encounter the best races there are.

Thanks, the only other question I'd have is what age should I run my horses at. Should they always run in there juvenile year or wait another year and when should they go chasing?

It depends upon the horse and your preference. For me if they are 2 m -2 m 4 f horses from the flat they'll run at 3, but the rest will start at 4. If something from the flat peaks very early I might put it over fences at 4 (in the autumn) but other than that all my horses with 'good' jumping skills will go over fences at 5 or 6. Ideally 5, but if they've been exported from the flat at 4 or 5, or I want them to have an extra year hurdling then they'll start at 6.

Currently the majority of my horses are from a flat game and compete over hurdles and fences because they're so much better than the competition at the moment they just win everything so it doesn't really matter where I run them. But once I get the breeding going I expect I'll stick to more rigid pathways with them. i.e. they're either 'hurdlers' or 'chasers'

Seems only way to get good jumpers is off the flat. Lot harder than the flat game.

It is in my experience. I hardly bother with 'jumps' horses. All my best come from the flat and will be bred from flat lines. True of real racing too.
