				  Battling qualities

How much of a difference do they actually make because sometimes I have horses with 75% beating ones with 85%

I'd say BQ makes a difference. It appears the BQ dynamic shows when your horse is head and head with another in the stretch. Your horse will battle back when headed in the stretch. I'd imagine an 85% would battle back stronger than a 75% but if the 75% is superior in talent then he usually should have enough to hold off the 85% horse.
I've noticed that just breeding in some BQ to raise it from the normally seen 10% BQ makes a noticeable difference. Your horse's form line will have comments like "Gamely" and "Battled Back" in it.

Hard to be totally certain without knowing the code, but for me finish application is how well the horse finishes the race generally, speed and application, battling I suspect only comes into play when they are pressed by another horse with the same sort of general application. Though in simple terms the more the better, of either ability.
