Weirdly I've just been checking through and I have two 5f homebreds (it's rare!) and both were from the same parents.

First of all ignore the prefered distance listed because it's useless. I've tested this out in SO4 by breeding 20 5f mares to a 2m4f stallion. I repeated this a few times with 6f mares to 2m stallion etc.

The game just averaged out the number and gave somelike like 1m2f to 1m4f as prefered distance. The foals that were produced were a random bunch. Some were great at 6f and some great at 2m. So the foals produced is random from the 2 extrems of (5f to 2m4f) but the prefered distance listed was at 1m2f to 1m4f.

So looking at your pairings....

6f mare with 1m stallion if paired multiple times will produce a random bunch from 6f to 1m. It's possible that Mark added extra randomness in breeding and there could be mutations and you got a foal that runs a bit longer.

Yes thats how it was in all the other versions. You would expect to get a horse as you suggested in the range of 6f to 1mile or 5f to 1m4f ect depending on your breeding. However in SO5 i am experiencing various anomalies. Horses getting distances not indicated by either sire or mare. For example Milers out of 10f and 12f horses and horses like Crowds above. It may be has Rich suggested that the horses further up the linage have an effect which is great.

It has made thing more interesting on the breeding side.

Rich I have had 2 great 5f game horses in the breeding barn. They produced some good horses but no 5f horses

To be fair it is closer to real life... You can never tell with real horses what distance they'll want. Personally I like it, it is frustrating but you just sell it and start again. Or like I said use it to make a different line better. Looking again, I am not at all surprised with the result from your mating, your sprinter mare now is a miler on stamina and the stallion was average best 1m3f so actually having seen the mares stats I would have predicted 1m-1m3f. I have no idea why or how you expected a sprinter from that.

It's trial and error, you haven't done badly. Just keep trying, do some experiments and see what happens. I have also tried a 7f mare with a 5f stallion and had one great result and varying others. It's not an exact science so just keep trying and wait and see.

Just to add, isn't that part of the fun of it?? I'd be extremely bored with the game if you bred one type to one type and got that same type again. It's REALLY annoying when you keep getting horses who are too slow for 5f but don't stay 6f or 6f-7f but that is what makes this game good for me. You go back to the drawing board and you try something else. If that doesn't work then try again, then once you find that winning formula then you repeat as often as you can.

A horse that is too slow for 5f but doesn't stay 6f is one thing only.... glue.

Peace in the Valley produces a 5 furlong G1 winner so Crowds was just a freak of nature ( a 18 group 1 winning freak of nature that trials well ) All the other offspring by My Quite Music were useless sprinters. The glue variety
