Post TOM 11 - Uploads testing
Hi all

I have now released the page for uploading horses.

Log on to TOM and on the Menu go to TOM > View My Stable > Upload Horse.

As you can imagine, there are many processes going on in the background so there is plenty of opportunity for things to go wrong.

Here's what should happen:
- you can upload valid horses
- the number of horses you have uploaded will be displayed
- you will be able to upload up to the maximum number of horses
- once you have uploaded one horse, your details should be displayed in View All Trainers report

Please try and break and let me know if/when you find any bugs. You should not be able to upload 2 horses of the same name.

Any questions or problems, please note on this thread.

Note that I haven't yet added the ability to edit horse data and not all of the data displays at present. The immediate focus is on testing the uploading of horses to TOM.

Managed to upload fine. Just a couple of thoughts.

There doesn't appear to be anyway to delete horses from the stable at this moment. (or I'm being blond and missing the obvious).

Is there a maximum size of file you can upload? I created an empty txt document and renamed it .hrs and it uploaded fine. Just in case space is at a premium could someone maliciously crash the upload system if they rename a huge file and try and upload it?

Also if Keenan has uploaded some horses - should I be able to see his stable under view all stables? At present when I do that I can only see my stable.

Otherwise great to see the progress!

Hi Dodgy

Uploading horses was straightforward. As you said I could not upload 2 horses with the same name, but I did find that attempting to upload the same horse a second time returned a blank page with no indication as to what the problem was.

Once I had uploaded the maximum number of horses, clicking the Upload Horse link loaded a page showing the name of the last horse uploaded and a message telling me I have "uploaded the maximum number of horses currently allowed".

Clicking the View Your Stable link from both the main menu and the Upload Horse page shows the View My Stable page where I can see all of my uploaded horses.

The only problem I had was the View All Stables link. This loads the View All Trainers page, but only akhc's stable is listed. I can view his stable by clicking the stable name.

One final point, and just a bit of housekeeping really, is that the Log On link could be in a more prominent location on the Home page. It's not in the most obvious place to look at the moment and could be missed by some trainers.

This is exactly the type of constructive feedback I'm looking for. I will change the display to 2yo colt, 3yo filly etc.

As an aside, it's interesting to note that the definition of colt and filly differs from hemisphere. As I understand in the NH a colt or a filly is up to an including 4 yo where in the southern hemisphere it's up to an including 3yo. Happy to stand corrected

Good point. I'm always nervous about a delete function but it needs to be included. There are two options - allow trainers to have this option but only during upload windows or give admins the option to do this. The problem is that deleting a horse could be a way of bypassing the retirement process. I suppose the other question is when would you want to delete a horse rather than edit it?

No. This scenario is handled. I'm reusing Dave F's upload script with some changes for the new database structure and it is very thorough in terms of managing exceptions. Maximum file size is 70KB. This is hardcoded but easily changed.

In theory yes. I'll have a look and see if it's a problem at my end.

Again, thanks for the thorough and constructive feedback. The better the testing and the feedback, the better the end result. It's tempting to rush into running the league but a week or two of testing and fine tuning will pay dividends down the track.

You are right. This was the last change to DF's code - I updated the process/check but left out the error message. That's easily fixed. I was focussed on trying to ensure that you couldn't upload two horses with the same name. Note to self - I also need to add some code to allow horses to be involved in aged seasions eg a 3yo this season will only be able to race next season as a 4yo (assuming we use the same engine).

There's a little bit of fine tuning needed here so that only the second message displays. The first should only display after a horse is uploaded. It's not high priority but it would bug me down the track.

Sounds dodgy to me! Will look into it (also comment above).

Agreed. Easily fixed.
