Post How do you breed stayers (flat)?
I have been trying to breed some distances I wouldn't usually concentrate on. Mainly sprinters which I have been having some good success with and I may well upload one or two. But I am really struggling with staying horses that stay 1m7f+, my horses get 1m6f easily and are pretty good proven by my two league horses. But I have been trying to breed a 2m+ horse, but I just can't find any decent stayers to breed with. How do people do it?

It's not easy. Personally I find 1m6f the farthest I can breed with any certainty. The few 2m+ horses I have are from games where I have been lucky to find one horse that has dominated all the races from St Leger distances up. I don't actively look for them but in every game I start for breeding I just have a quick look in the barn at the start of each year to see if there are any candidates for breeding with and if there are I save that game so I can breed with that horse in the future over and over again.

Even now I know that I don't come close to Matt at 2m+. Feat Ping is an anomaly horse in my eyes as I have never seen times that fast at 2m4f.

If anyone has better methods of doing it I'd be all ears too!

Just thinking about it a little more. The key is trying to find horses that have a full stamina bar which is not easy. All my league horses that get 1m6 and even 2m are one notch below full.

To start with I bred my way up to 2m. Often breeding 1m6 horses together or 1m6 x 1m4 and every now and then those pairings would produce a horse which could stay further than the parents. After getting a good pool of 1m6-2m horses I then bred all those together and ended up by breeding 2m x 2m and then 2m4 x 2m4. I did of course pick up a few stallions on the way and found a horse which won the Gold Cup in a very fast time who was actually decent to breed with. He brought me down below 4:50 and from there the times came down and down.

On good ground with a pace of 28-30mph my 2m4 horses can do 4:42 at Ascot. For 2m the fastest ive seen with a 4yo, Pinks For Girls and Megastar, is 3:37. Pinks has been disappointing in the league so far, even when winning. I didn't think he'd get beat this season. Megastar is better on his day but must have a pace so his times are inconsistent.

It's a shame there aren't more races for the ultra long stayers in the league. Not even a G1. I think we should have a few more such races next time out so that it allows a greater range of choice for trainers to concentrate on (even if it's not so true to real life).

What kinds of attributes do you look for? Do they all still have max potential etc?

Maximize potential. All my horses have 95%+ maximum and realized potential by the end of 2 years. For stayers I also like cruising burst. Stayers need to cruise for longer so the higher the better? At least in my own simplistic mind anyway!

I was searching for a horse in the flat game with the aim of later running it in the grand national, came across an unraced 2m4 stallion a couple of months in or maybe earlier( Aggrivating who is in te NHC legue),picked him up for 130k, ran him for 2 or 3 seasons and he was a lot better than I expected, totally dominant in final season, so I shipped him off to stud, crossed him with the best game mares in the barn and my horse heroic quest is his granddaughter- I bred a mediocre filly from him, sent her to stud, crossed with the best staying stallion on offer, and heroic quest was born. He's also started off a few other lines such as a strong 1m2 to 1m4 line, and he's my main foundation sire, I also have another who was a far inferior racehorse and ran over 7f, but by crossing him with the best game mares I've managed to start a decent in game 6-8 furlong line.
