Post How do you build up your breeding stock in the begining?
I am curious how others go about building up there breeding stock when first starting a new game.

I've built up a nice load of cash from betting and actually buying unraced 2yo and reselling them back for more $. I have bought Group winners form the auction that were decent runners but had awful stat bars. Seems likea lot of money get's wasted looking for horses worth breeding, so I was curious how others went about it in there games. Any tips advice would be appreciated.

I try to find a really good stallion to be the foundation of my bloodline. It may take a lot of time to find 1 but if you can get a top class race horse(15+ group 1s) and then find some group winning mares to breed with you should begin to breed some unbelievable horses. Just keep going to auctions every week and you will find 1. You will need a second top gamebreed stallion in a few years to cover the fillies you breed.

If you don't like this method another alternative is to use the stallions in the breeding barn. But eithe way you are going to need good mares to start a decent breeding program

For me, the difficulty is getting good mares. Gamebred fillies seem to be appalling. I breed quantity to begin with, if a filly won a group race she'd go to the barn. Then you hope you get lucky and breed some decent fillies, once that happens you're set.

I find in this game the breeding results are quite consistent. Good stallion + good mare = instant star. This latest season I won every G1 and G2 race in the standard schedule so I've got a good across the board ability in stamina but I don't feel like I've got anything league standard.

Thanks for the tips!

I am still getting my feet wet, I'd eventually like to do the league but i'm sure you need some really monster horses to have a shot there

This is what I do too. I think it's all about getting a good foundation mare and getting a decent fillies line going, eventually with the aim that your colts will catch up with the fillies. I only just starting to get far enough into SO4 (season 16) when this began to happen and then my computer died and corrupted the game, so I'm hoping I can achieve it in this game.

I do think breeding is a little to predictable though, and far too easy. But then some game horses in my game are winning 20+ G1's so maybe it's the quality of the horses entering the races rather than the horses...

1) Start game on easy. Check horses (but must be stallion/colt) in game for rating greater than 80. If I like the stats then I play one season out. Then transfer said stallion to barn and breed every mare I can in a season.

2) Run till end of second season but don't advance to third. Save game and copy save game files into a backup directory.

3) Restart game and advance to third season. Check yearlings. Make sure majority of them are fillies.. If they are great. If not exit game copy backup save files into save directory and restart and advance to third season again. Keep going till I get the majority of yearlings being fillies.

4) Advance game till 4th season. Check detailed stats. Sell the ones I don't like. Play out till end of season for the ones I do like and export to breeding barn.

Run through steps 2-4 again to build up a stock quick. Or from 1-4 to get another stallion line going.
